Currently the RTBU has six Divisions:
1. The Administrative, Supervisory, Technical and Professional Division covers members employed in clerical, administrative, supervisory, technical or professional positions.
2. The Infrastructure Division covers members employed in the construction and maintenance of rail and associated structures, signalling, buildings, bridges, electrical reticulation and related areas.
3. The Locomotive Division covers locomotive and electric train drivers.
4. The Rail Operations Division covers members employed in operational areas including station staff, transit officers, guards, signallers, shunters
5. The Tram and Bus Division covers members employed in the public sector bus industry and light rail (tram) services.
6. The Workshops Division covers members, other than professional or salaried staff, employed in workshops, running sheds, depots and maintenance centres.
The Divisions are divided up into small Sub-Divisions that are based on the roles and responsibilities undertaken by members, for example, the Transit Officer's Sub-Division, Signallers Sub-Division, ETR Drivers and so on. RTBU members elect a Divisional President, Vice-President, Secretary and Divisional Representatives onto the Divisions every two years.
GOVERNING BODIES
NSW Branch Council
The RTBU's NSW Branch Council consists of the Members of the Executive, Delegates from each of the Divisions and RTBU Organisers. The NSW Branch Council is the governing body of the union and is responsible for:
- setting the policies and direction of the RTBU on issues affecting the interests of members, the Union and the industries in which the union operates.
- the financial and administrative organisation of the union; and
- the structure of the union to meet the needs of members.
NSW Branch Executive
The NSW Branch Executive is the Committee of Management of the Union and is responsible for the management of its affairs. the NSW Branch Executive which is made up of a President, Senior Vice-President, Junior Vice-President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Divisional Presidents and Secretaries.
The Branch Executive meets at least six times a year has responsibility for the care, control and management of the activities of the Union and between meetings of Branch Council.
Rules Governing The Operation Of The RTBU
How the Rail Tram and Bus Union operates is governed by two sets of organisational rules. The RTBU NSW Branch is registerd as a State union under the NSW Industrial Relations Act 1996 and is governed by a set of state rules.
The RTBU NSW Branch is also part of the Australian Rail, Tram and Bus Industry Union nationally and is registered natioanlly under the Workplace Relations Act 2006 and governed by a set of complementary national rules.
