What Is The RTBU And How Does It Operate?

RTBU Delegates and Officers Planning Weekend May 2007 RTBU Delegates and Officers Planning Weekend May 2007
The aim of the RTBU is to ‘Organise Workers In The Transport Industry To Protect And Build Their Rights At Work’.

About Us

The Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) is a union representing workers in the transport industry.  Membership of the union is open to anyone who works anywhere in light rail, rail or the public bus industry.

The aim of the RTBU is to ‘Organise Workers In The Transport Industry To Protect And Build Their Rights At Work'.

The RTBU's organisational plan identifies eight strategic operating areas for the union.  Within each of these areas specific goals have been identified by the union.  These goals are:

1. BARGAINING:

To incorporate both the organising and industrial outcomes in bargaining.

2. ORGANISING:

To build union power in workplaces by ensuring industrial goals reflect the defence and promotion of Your Rights At Work.

3. SERVICING:

To effectively and efficiently address servicing in order to meet the expectations of union members' in a timely manner while freeing up additional time to focus on organising and member recruitment

4. EDUCATING:

To provide education opportunities internally (officials and staff) and externally (delegates and activists) to RTBU staff and members.

5. COMMUNITY:

To develop meaningful links with relevant community organisations to gain support for goals identified by the RTBU and its members.

6. RESOURCES:

Goals in the area of resourcing and finances involved two areas:

  • getting more resources in (and not losing what the union already has); and
  • better utilisation of existing resources.

7. COMMUNICATING:

To develop a communication strategy that supports and advances the RTBU's goals.

8. POLITICAL:

To identify strategic leverage opportunities in order to exert pressure on relevant organisations and individuals to achieve the RTBU's goals.

To enable the RTBU to meet these goals members, workplace activists, delegates and union officers carry out in the following activities:

  • work to organise our sector of the transport industry;
  • work to continuously improve and maintain high workplace safety standards for workers and the travelling public;
  • ensure every worker is treated with dignity and respect in their workplace;
  • collectively bargaining for wages and conditions that reflect the skills and contribution workers make to the transport industry and the economy;
  • deliver industrial, legal and advocacy services to members;
  • educate delegates and workplace activists;
  • campaign on key issuess effecting members and their families in the community; and
  • consult and work with the community about transport issues.

Working With Other Organisations To Achieve Success

Transport unions and peak union bodies are working together to be successful and to effectively represent workers and their families.  Together with the Maritime Union of Australia and the Transport Workers Union, the RTBU is a proud member of the Transport Unions Federation (TUF) and is an affiliate of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) which organises transport workers globally.
